South Gate families are already stretched. We’re paying more for rent, groceries, gasoline, utilities, and everyday necessities.
Now City Hall politicians want to add an 8% Utility Users Tax to electricity, natural gas, water, phone service, cable, satellite, internet-based calling, and streaming subscriptions.
The average household has at least three streaming services, which means Measure SG would cost the average South Gate family about $600 more every year.
MEASURE SG IS A GENERAL TAX
THAT MEANS POLITICIANS DECIDE WHAT TO DO WITH THE MONEY.
Because Measure SG is a general tax, it means the tax revenue must go into the general fund. Politicians may talk about 911 response, streets, crossing guards, parks, and youth programs, but they cannot legally dedicate the revenue to those programs.

What Happened to
Measure P's Tax Revenue?
South Gate voters previously approved Measure P, a permanent general sales tax.
Before another permanent tax, City Hall should account for the revenue taxpayers already provide.
MEASURE SG'S EXEMPTION WON'T PROTECT STRUGGLING SOUTH GATE RESIDENTS
The exemption also isn’t automatic. South Gate residents would still have to complete an application process before an exemption can be granted.
An exemption this narrow does not change the basic fact that Measure SG increases household and business costs across South Gate.
